I think very little.
Many (meant like users) are incline to choose one distro, one Desktop Environment or one Shell because according to many others, “that” is the best, “that” is used by most of the people, not because that is the best for yourself.
So i read in most forums, blogs, websites:
“What’s the best Linux distro ?” or “Is better Unity than Gnome-shell ?” or “I have this hardware, which distro/DE should i use ?“
and so on.
Diffusion is not ever synonym of quality. If was true, Windows would be the better; its reputation was based on general belief that is “the only one”. Almost none knew that oneself can choose something else, freely.
The GNU Project was born to free the user by the proprietary software’s chains.
Linux was born to be the core of the future distros.
From them, today exist hundreds of (more or less) free OS with thousands of contributors and upstream projects which ensure the upkeep of distros. Everyone of them can determinate autonomously what path, what changes they must do to improve the own work (can be named Gnome-shell or Unity or Mate or Cinnamon or any other name) and obviously is impossible satisfy all people.
That is important is to respect and defend the free software. Defending free software means defend the own freedom.
This is a great chance.
Many people started to use a PC with a single desktop, with one “Start” button (always in left bottom corner), with the same issues and the same problems.
Every user has a great power; every user can freely choose a system, can choose a own desktop, can even create an individual distro so what’s the sense to know “the best something”. There are most possibilities, choose the best for yourself.
